Trader Joe’s Greens, Beans, and Grains Review

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Greens, Beans, and Grains is a tasty entrée that would make a light lunch of dinner, yet filling enough to be a whole meal.  Cooked perfectly in the microwave and was ready in about 6 minutes. Medium heat so be warned.

The cons:  I felt after eating this there was the lingering aftertaste of garlic.  Not everyone will enjoy cilantro (I liked it) as for some people they are tasting something soapy.

The verdict:  For $2.99, I had some doubts as this seems to have every buzzword worthy ingredient.  Instead, I was pleasantly surprise as to how good this was.  The couscous came out perfectly cooked and the kale stew reminded me almost like a curry in the sense of it was a tomato based sauce with a medium heat.  The couscous was light and easily fluffed with a fork and mixes well with the stew.  The stew is tasty on its own but is better absorbed with a grain.  I’d buy this again.

Would I buy this again?  This was a complete surprise for me, but yes I would. I avoid trying this and it sat in my freezer for some time.  Why?  Well, it sounded healthy.  Healthy usually doesn’t taste that good.  This actually tasted good.  The smell of peanuts will hit you right out of the microwave.  As the dish cooled down it was really well done with a good balance of spice and texture.  As Trader Joe’s suggested on the box, some chopped roasted peanuts would add some welcome crunch to this.  Most importantly it was a filling dish.  So, in addition to the Indian entrees in the freezer section, this could also ended up in my regular rotation of lunches.
