Trader Joe’s Canneles de Bordeaux

The pros: Trader Joe’s Canneles de Bordeaux is respectable in calories.  Reminded me of a creme brulee with it’s caramelized outside (but no crunch here) and custard filling.  I enjoyed this more heated slightly in the microwave than cooled.

The cons:  These dessert are small so plan accordingly.  You’ll finish each in about four bites.

The verdict:  For $3.99 you get four little canneles.  The canneles are fluted for extra texture.  The outside of the canneles is caramelized and much sweeter than the rest of the dessert.  While they are caramelized, they do not have the familiar crunch of a creme brulee.  The inside is a nice thick custard that can stand up on it’s own.  While the custard flavor was most noticeable, there was the flavor of vanilla and rum also present.  I enjoyed the custard more when it was slightly warmed.    The custard isn’t overly sweet, but it’s sweet enough to be a dessert.  Overall I’d buy this again as it made for a tasty, yet portion controlled custard based dessert.

Would I buy this again?  For me, this is a yes.  The calorie count is reasonable and they are just enough to work with your sweet tooth.  If you like a good custard, then you’ll probably like these too.
